Magi tennis defeats Bismarck High, 9-0

Jimmy Lafakis/MDN Minot eighth-grader Aidan Diehl hits a backhand shot during Tuesday afternoon's match against Bismarck High at Hammond Park. The Magicians claimed a 9-0 win over the Demons.

While a series of blustery winds whipped through Hammond Park, the Minot High School boys tennis team earned a clean sweep over Bismarck High. The Magicians moved to 4-1 on the season after the 9-0 victory.

All singles and doubles matches ended in straight-set victories for Minot.

“It’s usually fairly sheltered over there, so we don’t have the conditions we have today,” MHS head coach Scott DeLorme said about the Hammond Park courts. “But, I thought our guys did a nice job battling the conditions and finding ways to use it to our advantage.”

Minot junior Zach Diehl claimed a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 victory over Lucas Schell at No. 1 singles. Seniors Zach Renaud (6-1, 6-0) and Ridge Jaeger (6-4, 6-2) dispatched Demons Adam Vasichek and Tyler Wahl in the respective No. 2 and No. 3 singles matches.

The Magicians did not stop there. Sophomore Hunter Rice, eighth-grader Aidan Diehl, and junior Colby Opp surrendered just six combined games in their matches.

The pair of Zach Diehl/Renaud captured a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles, while Jaeger and Aidan Diehl seized a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2. The No. 3 win belonged to Rice and sophomore Josh Hegstad. The sophomore duo took a 6-1, 6-4 victory.

“We are making a strong effort to use multiple doubles combinations during the regular season, as we know we’ll need a number of guys come tournament time,” DeLorme said. “With the cancellation of non-conference matches this season — where we usually use those to see combinations — we’ve been put in a position to do it during conference matches this season. This team has made it easy, as they’re willing to be partners with anyone without hesitation. That team concept is a positive that will only help us in the final month of the season.”

The teams will meet again at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10 in Bismarck.
