Magi football blanks Dickinson for first win, 23-0
Somebody had to walk away with win No. 1 on the season Friday night at Duane Carlson Stadium.
The Minot High School football team made sure it was them on homecoming. The Magi (1-2) won 23-0 over winless Dickinson (0-3).
The lone touchdown in the first half was a second-quarter quarterback sneak by Trevor Emke.
Hitting the repeat button, Emke punched in another hard-nosed sneak to give Minot a 14-0 lead with 9:27 left in the third quarter.
Looking to answer, a long third-quarter drive by Dickinson ended with a red zone fumble on fourth down for a costly turnover.
Minot added two points at the start of the quarter on a Dickinson punt attempt. The ball sailed over the punter and into the end zone. Intentional grounding trying to desperately throw the ball out of the end zone resulted in a safety.
Caleb Reing made a couple of quick cuts on his way to a touchdown with 7:11 remaining. That put the Magi up 23-0.
Minot could have extended its lead, but Hunter Ruzicka had a punt return touchdown brought back on a block in the back penalty.
Minot’s last three wins, including two at the end of last season, have all been shutouts.
Next week, the Magi will play on Saturday with a 1:30 p.m. kickoff at the Bismarck Community Bowl against capital city rival Bismarck Century. Minot’s last win against Century came in the 2017 Class AAA playoffs. It was a snowy 14-10 victory to reach the Dakota Bowl.
