Sabre Dogs drop series finale against Fremont Moo

FREMONT, Neb. — The Souris Valley Sabre Dogs failed to learn their lesson on Saturday, so history repeated itself on Sunday.

For a second straight Expedition League affair, the Sabre Dogs (21-20) started fast but ran out of ammunition in the later innings against the Fremont Moo (25-18).

The Moo won 7-4 to take the three-game series and, in the process, extended their lead in the Clark Division standings. Meanwhile, the Sabre Dogs lost more ground to the Lewis Division-leading Badlands Big Sticks with only 11 games remaining in the regular season.

Souris Valley drove in three runs with two doubles in the top of the first inning to set the tone. Mason Dinesen and Sebastian Murillo had the two RBI extra-base hits.

The Sabre Dogs held a 2-0 lead after two innings on Saturday but ultimately lost 7-2. A game recap can be found online at minotdailynews.com.

It turns out a 3-0 advantage wasn’t safe either.

Fremont pounced with four runs in the bottom of the second inning off a pair of doubles too, plus a bases-loaded walk. RBIs went to Luke Boynton, Dillon Sears and Cooper Morrison.

Morrison was unstoppable in the batter’s box. He reached in all five of his plate appearances, going 4-for-4 with a walk, a double and two RBIs.

Runs were traded across the fifth and sixth innings, as the Moo managed to keep the Sabre Dogs behind them. A two-run single by Chaney Dodge off relief pitcher Max Kendall proved to be the dagger.

Fremont’s lead grew to 7-4, and the final score didn’t budge.

Souris Valley starting pitcher Josh Robins went 5 2/3 innings, giving up six runs (four earned) on five hits. Brody Sintek picked up the win for the Fremont Moo by going five innings, allowing three runs on six hits.

The Sabre Dogs have one last road trip to complete against the Hastings Sodbusters. The four-game series starts at 7:35 p.m. this evening and will go through Thursday.

On Friday, Souris Valley returns home for a pivotal weekend series against the Big Sticks at Corbett Field. Saturday will feature a doubleheader, as the two teams will play four games in three days.

The regular season wraps up in Minot with a rematch against the Fremont Moo from August 17-19.

Only the regular-season division winners advance to the best-of-three Expedition League championship series on August 21-23.
