Magi tennis topples Williston, 7-2

Fresh off Saturday’s clean sweep of Jamestown, the Minot High School boys tennis team kept its winning streak alive with a 7-2 victory over Williston on Monday afternoon. The Magicians (2-0 WDA) won five of the six singles matches over the Coyotes (1-2, 1-2 WDA).

At the No. 2 singles position, Minot senior Zach Renaud earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Mason Haugenoe. Fellow senior Ridge Jaeger seized a 6-1, 6-0 win over Williston’s Raleigh Martin at No. 3 singles.

The Magi swept the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 spots in straight sets. Sophomore Hunter Rice, eighth-grader Aidan Diehl and junior Colby Opp contributed victories.

“I thought I saw our guys set up a lot of points and build points today — which was nice to see — versus just trying to win the point quickly on the first shot,” MHS head coach Scott DeLorme said. “If we can continue to build on that idea of setting up points, I think our singles play will continue to get better in the short term.”

Zach Diehl and Jaeger played a competitive No. 1 doubles match against Colby Nehring and Haugenoe, but the Coyotes took a narrow 3-6, 6-3, 4-6 win. However, Renaud and Aidan Diehl won a 6-1, 6-0 match at No. 2 doubles. Rice and Opp finished the job with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 3 doubles.

Minot will travel to Bismarck for today’s 2 p.m. match against Legacy.
