Magi football drops season-opener against Mandan, 33-14

MANDAN — The Minot High School football team withstood Mandan’s first outburst. The second punch, however, did them in.

For a third consecutive season, the Mandan Braves (1-0) upended the Minot High Magicians (0-1). The final score Friday evening from the Starion Sports Complex in Mandan was 33-14.

The first half featured 33 combined points in the season-opener for both squads.

Mandan jumped out to a 13-0 lead on a pair of short touchdown runs by Garret Schaefbauer and Olin Halstengard.

The Magi scored twice in three minutes to take the lead at 14-13. Junior first-year starting quarterback Trevor Emke connected with Teagan Kinchen from 15 yards out to score Minot’s first touchdown of the season. Then, a swing pass from Emke unleashed Hunter Ruzicka for a 36-yard touchdown with 1:31 left in the first half.

The Braves needed two plays to counter. Jayce Lowman threw a 52-yard touchdown pass to Treys Tietz to put Mandan up 19-14 at halftime.

In the first half, Mandan outgained Minot 256-166 in yardage.

Following a scoreless third quarter, Schaefbauer plowed into the end zone with a 1-yard run to open the final frame. His second touchdown of the game put Mandan up 26-14.

The Braves added one more touchdown on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Lowman to Anthony Johnson, 33-14.

Minot High hosts Jamestown in its home opener next Friday, Sept. 4, at Duane Carlson Stadium. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m.
