Minot Vistas, Mandan Chiefs win game apiece in doubleheader

MANDAN — Late Tuesday evening, the Minot Chiefs and Mandan Vistas faced off in a pair of one-run games. Jacob Weiand’s walk-off RBI single gave the Chiefs a 3-2 victory in eight innings during Game 1 of Tuesday evening’s doubleheader, but the Vistas bounced back and earned a 4-3 win in the nightcap.

Minot scored its first run of the game on an error in the second inning. Dylan Vigested brought home Chase Burke with an RBI single in the fifth frame.

Vistas starting pitcher Calvin Watkins finished his outing with six strikeouts, two walks and no runs allowed. The Chiefs tied the score on Isaac Huettl’s two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

In the eighth, Lucas Burgum came around to score after hitting a leadoff single. Weiand brought Burgum home with just one out.

Each team scored two runs in the nightcap’s second inning. Trent Greek’s RBI double scored Kersey Harris in the top of the third.

The Chiefs got a run back in the fourth, but the Vistas increased their lead to 4-3 after Greek knocked in another run with a double.

The Vistas will play at 1 p.m. Sunday in West Fargo.

Big Sticks withstand Sabre Dogs’ rally

for walk-off win

DICKINSON — The Badlands Big Sticks ambushed the Souris Valley Sabre Dogs early on and finished the deal late.

The Sabre Dogs fought back from a 6-0 deficit but lost 7-6 on a walk-off sacrifice fly by Gaylan Young Tuesday evening in Dickinson. With the win, the Big Sticks (13-11) overtook the Sabre Dogs (12-11) for first place in the Expedition League Lewis Division standings.

The Big Sticks rattled Sabre Dogs starting pitcher Matt Houlihan with a five-spot in the first inning. Houlihan only managed to record one out before getting pulled from the contest for relief pitcher Dylan Roach.

Conner VanCleave did most of the damage with one swing of the bat. His three-run home run started the scoring before a wild pitch and an error allowed the Big Sticks to tack on two more runs. An RBI single by Mason Schwellenbach in the second inning built the gap up to 6-0.

Itching for a rally, Souris Valley got on the scoreboard with an RBI double by Josh Solomon in the third inning and then plated three runs in the fifth to get the deficit down to two. Tim Conway and Chase Alford each knocked in runs with singles.

The Sabre Dogs loaded the bases with nobody out in the sixth inning. That ended the evening for Badlands starting pitcher Nick Flesher.

Colin Millar came in out of the bullpen and walked Solomon on four straight pitches to gift Souris Valley its fifth run. Cal Villareal also crossed home plate later in the frame to draw the contest even at 6-6 before a double play ended the inning.

The Big Sticks wouldn’t allow the victory to slip away. Young brought home Wyatt Setian on an RBI sacrifice fly to right field in the bottom of the ninth to ignite a walk-off celebration.

Both teams reconvene for the second game of the three-game series at 7:35 p.m. this evening in Dickinson.
