Teammate tag: Lauren McLean, Tia Haskins

Jimmy Lafakis/MDN Minot High's Tia Haskins surveys the floor during a game earlier this year.

Editor’s note: The teammate tag is a series of eight questions designed to test how well two teammates know each other. Each contestant answers four questions about themselves and then attempts to predict their teammate’s answers to four different questions.

Lauren McLean and Tia Haskins are former Minot High Schoolbasketball players.

Q: What’s your go-to move on the court?

McLean answer: “I’d say it was definitely attacking the basket. I didn’t have any specific skills or moves that were really my go-to. Just being aggressive and attacking was my go-to.”

Haskins guess: “Playing post, doing a power dribble and going up with it.”

Jimmy Lafakis/MDN Minot High's Lauren McLean dribbles the ball up the court during a game earlier this year.

McLean reaction: “I was definitely one of the bigger girls on the team this year. I definitely used my size to my advantage and my strength. I think that’s definitely accurate that she said the power dribble. It shows that we’ve been playing together since travel. I’ve always used that move, for sure.”

Q: What was the high point of this past season?

McLean answer: “Definitely when we were at home and we got to beat Legacy in that one-point game. That was something that we had been working toward for years. It was so exciting to do that on our home court with our fans behind us.”

Haskins guess: “The game that we beat Mandan. They were ranked higher than us. We beat them by one.”

McLean reaction: “Oh, OK. Yeah, I think that was the exact same score as the Legacy game. I think it was 53-52, actually. On our home court. I can definitely see where she picked that one.”

Q: What is your favorite basketball movie?

McLean answer: “My grandpa wanted us to watch ‘Hoosiers’ as a family once. I really liked that one. It’s an inspirational story. You can get behind it.”

Haskins guess: “Oh, gosh. I’m just going to go with ‘Coach Carter.’ I’ve seen that one before and it’s kind of motivational.”

McLean reaction: “Sure, that’s fair. I don’t know if either she or I watch a ton of basketball movies.”

Q: You are starting an all-time NBA team through a fantasy draft. Select one of these three players as your first choice: Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant or LeBron James.

McLean answer: “I think I’d have to go with Jordan. I like his style and the way he played. I don’t even know how you would explain it. He’s obviously one of the greats. I just really love the way he played. He was fun to watch. I think he’s a really admirable player. His sportsmanship and his talent, all of it altogether. He was a class act.”

Haskins guess: “I’m going to say Kobe. He was a great basketball player. He’s given motivation to a bunch of different people.”

McLean reaction: “He’s definitely, of course, one of the greats as well. I can see where she picked that one. To be honest, I haven’t watched much of the NBA now or growing up. I just haven’t followed much of the pros. I’ve seen enough through social media or highlights to know that he was a class act. On and off the court, he inspired a ton of people.”

Q: Throughout your entire basketball career, which teammate has inspired you the most?

Haskins answer: “I would say Paige Rosencrans because she was the leader of the team.”

McLean guess: “Her older sister, Tate, played. Not all the way through her senior year, but I think that they always had a pretty special connection when they played together. They played a couple years on a travel team together. Even though they were a couple years apart in school, I think they always were enjoying playing together. I’d say that she looked up to her as a sister figure and a player.”

Haskins reaction: “[Laughs] I would have never thought of that. My sister didn’t play her last two years of high school.”

Q: What is your favorite road gym to play in?

Haskins answer: “I would probably say Legacy because it’s bigger and newer.”

McLean guess: “I think we all like Legacy’s gym a lot. It’s new. It’s really spacious. At the same time, the fans seem relatively close. It kind of reminds me of our gym, in a way.”

Haskins reaction: “Yeah, it’s a big, open gym. It’s a nice gym to play in. There’s lots of room.”

Q: What is the career achievement you’re most proud of?

Haskins answer: “Our record this season was a lot better than it has been. I thought we did very well this season.”

McLean guess: “As a team, we were all super-excited to get to the WDA state qualifier game and play in the main court in the Civic Center. That was a big deal for all of us.”

Haskins reaction: “That was a good achievement of ours, too. We didn’t make it to WDA last year. I guess that would be a big step.”

Q: What is your favorite professional basketball team?

Haskins answer: “I’ll go with the Golden State Warriors. Stephen Curry has been big on that team.”

McLean guess: “I’m not sure how much she follows the WNBA or the NBA. As a team, we’ve gotten to go to a couple of Minnesota Lynx games. Maybe that one. They were fun. I think we enjoyed them more for the experiences, but it’s also really cool to see the experienced players and be a part of that environment.”

Haskins reaction: “Yeah, I don’t really watch either the WNBA or the NBA. It was fun going to that (Lynx) game.”
