Strong start for local talent at Spring Golf Championships

BISMARCK — The first day of the two-day 2020 North Dakota Spring State Championships at Ridgewood Golf Course in Bismarck offered a glimpse of the state’s bountiful talent. After the NDHSAA canceled high school spring sports due to the COVID-19 pandemic, over 150 Class A and B boys and Class B girls signed up for the event.

Here’s a look at how local golfers fared on Tuesday:

Class A

Minot High School’s Gavin Argent posted the best performance of all local golfers. Argent shot a 77 (+5) on the first day and finished in a five-way tie for second place.

“I had to adjust by staying short of the holes and making sure I had a lot of attention to detail on every shot,” Argent said. “It was great competing with some new guys.”

Two more Minot players are knotted in a six-way tie for 29th place. Peyton Bartsch and Henry Langhans both shot an 85 (+13).

Brock Jones finished his round in a three-way tie for 43rd place. Jones, another Minot golfer, recorded an 89 (+17).

Fargo Shanley’s Jacob Skarperud seized a five-stroke lead on the rest of the field. Skarperud shot for par, posting a 72.

Class B

Two local Class B boys are inside the top 10. Jaden McCloud of Bottineau scored 79 (+7) to sit in seventh place, while Zach Hendrickson of Our Redeemer’s is tied for eighth place with an 81 (+9).

“I have that competitive drive in me that makes me want to beat everyone around me,” said Hendrickson, who is locked in a three-way tie. “I’ll be watching what everyone in my group gets and try to one-up them.”

Bottineau’s Max Palmer secured 11th place with his 82 (+10), while Glenburn’s Jordan Anderson finished in a two-way tie for 23rd place with an 87 (+15).

Luke Anderson of Glenburn (88, +16) finds himself in a three-way tie for 25th place. Oak Grove’s Grayson Wetch holds a five-stroke lead on the competition after recording an even 72.

On the girls side, Nedrose’s Hailee Miller finished her day in 21st place. Miller shot a 109 (+37).

Four-time state champion Emily St. Aubin of South Border leads the field after shooting a 76 (+4).
