Spring Golf Championships conclude, local golfers earn recognition

BISMARCK — The 2020 North Dakota Spring State Championships concluded after Wednesday’s second round of action at the Ridgewood Golf Course in Bismarck.

The top 10 golfers in each division were named to their respective All-State teams.

Here’s a glance at the tournament’s final results:

Class A

Gavin Argent of Minot High School finished in a two-way tie for 15th place. Argent completed the tournament with a score of 162 (+18).

Minot’s Henry Langhans concluded the event in a three-way tie for 35th place. Langhans shot a 172 (+28).

Fargo Shanley’s Jacob Skarperud shot an even 72 on both days and won the tournament by seven strokes.

Class B

Bottineau’s Jaden McCloud placed eighth after posting a combined score of 163 (+19). McCloud shot an 84 on Wednesday and received All-State honors.

Zach Hendrickson of Our Redeemer’s also recorded a top-10 finish. Hendrickson finished in a two-way tie for ninth place after shooting a 164 (+20) over the two-day event.

“It was really fun competing with all the guys and just trying to see how high I can place,” Hendrickson said. “Getting recognized as ‘All-State’ is cool, though. For sure. Having ORCS next to my name during sports has always been special to me and will continue to be a special thing about competing.”

Max Palmer of Bottineau shot a combined 169 (+25) and finished in a two-way tie for 14th place. Oak Grove’s Grayson Wetch continued his stellar play and captured the Class B boys title with a score of 145 (+1).

Nedrose’s Hailee Miller secured 19th place after shooting a 209 (+65). Emily St. Aubin of South Border won the Class B girls division with a four-stroke advantage and a final score of 154 (+10).

Expedition League

season will begin June 26

RAPID CITY, S.D. — At approximately 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening, the Expedition League announced their scheduled return date of Friday, June 26. According to a press release, the collegiate baseball league’s 52-game season will end on Wednesday, August 19.

The Lewis Division’s regular-season winner will face the Clark Division’s regular-season winner in a best-of-three championship series from August 21-23. Because of restrictions in place, four teams will not participate this season: Casper Horseheads, Sioux Falls Sunfish, Spearfish Sasquatch and Wheat City Whiskey Jacks.

Six teams will compete: Badlands Big Sticks, Fremont Moo, Hastings Sodbusters, Pierre Trappers, Western Nebraska Pioneers and Minot’s Souris Valley Sabre Dogs. The Sabre Dogs play at Corbett Field in Minot.

The Expedition League’s 2020 All-Star Extravaganza will not take place at the Casper Horseheads’ Mike Lansing Field and will be moved to the 2021 season.

“Folks are chomping at the bit for us to get started and we’re blessed to be able to play our 2020 season,” league president Steve Wagner said in the release.

The league’s official schedule will be released at a later date.
