Non-wing sprint cars invade Nodak Speedway on Father’s Day

Alex Eisen/MDN Minot's Dusty Larson (20L) and Turtle Lake's Myles Tomlinson (15T) lead the Western Renegade Non-Wing Sprint Cars to the green flag of a heat race Sunday evening at Nodak Speedway.

Nodak Speedway delivered a special treat for Father’s Day with the Western Renegade Non-Wing Sprint Car Series making a stop in town.

The wingless sprint cars joined the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Hobby Stocks and IMCA Stock Cars for an action-packed Sunday night of racing.

Race recaps for the four classes are below.

Non-Wing

Sprint Cars

Only fitting that on Father’s Day, a son-father duo of Dusty Lawson and Kevin Lawson started on the front row for the eight-car, 20-lap feature.

That’s how the lone heat race finished as well, with Dusty cruising to a victory over his father Kevin. Joel Larson was Dusty’s main competitor in the main feature.

A restart with eight laps remaining saw Dusty Lawson pull away.

However, Larson kept chipping away and was right behind Lawson as the white flag waved. With the pressure on, Dusty Lawson kept his cool and held Larson behind him for the win.

IMCA Modifieds

Former 2017 IMCA Modifieds national champion Jason Wolla closed out the heat races with a bang. He used the high groove to slip past Jerad Thelen on the final lap to earn a hard-fought win.

Wolla started 10th in the main feature alongside the other heat winner Travis Hagen. They both methodically picked their way up to the front with a couple of cautions helping regroup the field.

With 19 laps left, the front six were Marcus Tomlinson, John Flory, Roy Spielman, Wolla, Wayne Johnson and Hagen. A bad restart saw Spielman drop back, and Hagen pulled off the track two laps later.

The next lap, leader Tomlinson went off the surface of the track in turn No. 2 and gave the lead to Flory with Wolla chasing hard. Flory had to start dealing with lap traffic with 10 laps left.

Wolla was on Flory’s bumper with three laps left. Wolla made his move for the win on the final corner with a slide job pass. Wolla briefly grabbed the lead, but Flory crossed back underneath him to win the drag race to the line for his first win at Nodak Speedway this season.

IMCA Hobby Stocks

Andrew Bertsch, second in the season point standings, damaged the front of his hobby stock in the second heat race after being unable to avoid a spinning Kyler Satran. Bertsch had to borrow Troy Bertsch’s car for the main feature.

Another favorite, Brandon Honrud, pulled out of the same heat race with car programs, and Brad King got spun around coming to the finish line but was still awarded second place behind Riese Dignan.

An adventurous first lap of the 15-lap feature saw multiple cars going off the track. The caution flag waved and forced a complete restart.

The following restart saw Jason Ruby go around. Then it was pole-sitter Satran, who had trouble keeping his car straight all evening long, going the wrong way.

Season points leader and Heat 3 winner Caden Appelt found himself at the back of the pack after going off the track with 14 laps left. Appelt was already back up to sixth place on a single-file restart with 10 laps left.

Jesse Long brought out the next caution a lap later and had to be helped off the track. A section of the crowd wasn’t pleased that Brock Beeter wasn’t flagged for causing the spin.

Shawn Green then spun Appelt with seven laps remaining.

Upfront, Trevor Haas had to contend with Beeter and Riese Dignan. Both eventually got by with five laps left. Getting those last laps in, however, wasn’t going to happen.

Satran went around one final time with three laps left, and then Dignan went side-by-side with Beeter and met the same fate. One last wreck ended the race with three laps left due to reaching the time limit.

Beeter went down to victory lane and was greeted with a mixed chorus of cheers and boos from the crowd. Haas took second and Appelt fought back up to finish third.

IMCA Stock Cars

Williston’s Dalton Flory had issues with his power steering and was in the hot pits as the stock cars worked the track in before the main feature. Flory’s crew couldn’t get his car fixed before the race went green.

The front row of Keith Mattox and Rob Stenvold went head-to-head for the lead for 10 laps before Joren Boyce brought out the first caution for going the wrong way to leave the track following a spinout.

Mattox rode away from Stenvold on the restart and then watched Nick Lund, Joe Flory and Mike Hagen battle for second place behind him.

Joe Flory, the father of Dalton Flory, pulled Mattox back and made the pass for the lead going to the white flag. Mattox lost all his momentum and slipped back through the leaders.

Joe Flory picked up the Father’s Day win to ease some of the pain of Dalton Flory’s struggles. Lund held off Hagen for third place.

The fifth week of racing at Nodak Speedway gets underway at 7 p.m. next Sunday. The IMCA Sport Compacts are scheduled to be off again for a third straight week. The four other regular weekly classes are set to run.
