Near no-no, two shutouts for Minot Vistas over Mandan

MANDAN — Eli Nissen flirted with a perfect game and Aydan Almy went the distance.

The Minot Vistas starting pitchers held the Mandan Chiefs scoreless in a pair of road wins Thursday evening by scores of 1-0 and 9-0.

Minot improved to 6-4 overall with the sweep, while Mandan dropped to 1-4 overall.

Almy tossed a complete-game shutout in Game 1. He allowed six hits and struck out four batters.

Minot barely gave Almy enough run support with the Vistas’ lone tally coming in the second inning. Caleb Reing brought home Logan Merck on an RBI single.

That was the only run Mandan starting pitcher Blake Arenz conceded before being replaced by Easton Andresen, who got the final two outs to get through the seventh inning.

One-upping a complete-game shutout is a hard ask, but Nissen didn’t back down from the challenge in the nightcap. Nissen retired the first 16 batters he faced before issuing a walk to Avery Bogner in the sixth inning.

The no-hitter was still intact going into the bottom of the seventh. Following a groundout for the first out, Nissen gave up a single to Isaac Huettl to break up the no-hit bid.

Nissen, who finished with eight strikeouts, was replaced by Tyler Harbort on the mound. Harbort gave up one more hit to Blake Arenz before wrapping up a convincing 9-0 victory in Mandan.

In Game 2, the Vistas racked up 15 hits in total. Kersey Harris, Calvin Watkins, Chase Burke, Braedon McCarty and Merck all had a multi-hit game. Watkins knocked in four RBIs.

Minot hits the road again for a 4:30 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday in Dickinson.
