Alex’s Tale of the Tape #885, Date: Jan. 12, 2018

The Sun Devils went up to Minot, looking for a game to steal. Instead, they were greeted with frigid temperatures and the red-hot No. 2-ranked Minot State men’s hockey team.

The Beavers outshot the No. 24-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils, 38-15, and foiled their upset attempt with a 6-1 home victory at Maysa Arena.

MSU increased its winning streak to seven games after losing its first home game since October 2014 against the University of Jamestown on Nov. 17, 2017.

Despite winning by five goals, the damage could have been a lot worse.

“It was kind of frustrating, not in anger, but just frustrating in terms of not being able to capitalize,” MSU head coach Wade Regier said. “Think about all the times we missed the net or hit the post. Sometimes you don’t even need to shoot, just take the puck and do a deke to change the shooting angle.”

The Beavers made some amends for all the chances they missed in the first period with two goals late. Lyndon Lipinski scored with 19.2 seconds left, and Derrick Brooks beat the buzzer with .9 seconds left, 6-1.

The four other goals were scored by Sam Briscoe, Johl Swedlo, Paul O’Connor and Adam Wowryk.

Stamina control and recouping energy were more of a challenge than scoring goals in the first period for the Minot High School girls hockey team.

The Majettes, playing with 10 skaters and goaltender Amber Borkhuis in the opening period, buried three goals early on to set the tone.

When reinforcements arrived, Minot High kept piling on for a 7-0 win over winless Williston in a non-counter exhibition contest at Maysa Arena.

MHS started with a depleted bench because some of the regulars sat out and rested from the stands after playing in a junior varsity game against Mandan two hours prior.

“At the start of the game, we were fine,” MHS head coach Weylin Wahlstrom said. “It was our two varsity lines, and they carry most of our ice time anyways. It actually helped us get into a rhythm.”

The Majettes poached three goals from close range in the first period. Cleaning up the scraps at the net were Alyssa Aguirre, Carson Abrahamson and Paige Ackerman.

“After that, it was business as usual,” Wahlstrom said about the lines. “Some of the girls even said that sitting up in the stands gave them a chance to see some things from a different perspective.”

On the verge of history, Minot State junior Sofia Lewis sprinted past the Southwest Minnesota State defense not once, but twice.

With two goals, Lewis inched within one goal of tying MSU’s all-time goal-scoring record (34) and set the Beavers up to beat the Mustangs at Herb Parker Stadium.

On senior day, freshman Anabel Noches notched her second game-winning goal of the season in the 70th minute to seal the 3-2 victory.

Noches, standing near the back post, was at the right place at the right time when a corner kick delivery was deflected her way. With no hesitation, Noches volleyed the ball into the back of the net.

MSU held on over a hectic final 20 minutes for its second consecutive win.

Lewis needed the hat-trick tally to tie Ninfa “Ninja” Ramirez’s all-time school goal record. It never came, and Lewis was unaware of what she could have accomplished.

“Am I? That’s cool. I thought I was a couple more away,” Lewis said. “It’s exciting. But my goal is not to break records but set records that nobody else can touch, and that will motivate other girls.”
