Alex’s Tale of the Tape #897, Date: Jan. 20, 2018

The Minot Minotauros hold off the Austin Bruins for a 2-1 win, after dropping a 4-3 overtime loss to them the night before.

After 38 minutes of deadlocked 0-0 hockey, the Minotauros finally turned a shot on goal into a goal. A slap shot from the blue line by Lincoln Erne required an acrobatic save from Austin goaltender Mads Sogaard. Yet, Sogaard left the rebound in the crease to be buried by Keenan Lund.

With 16 minutes remaining, the Tauros grabbed a two-goal lead. Andrew Kangas skated behind Austin’s goal — nearly knocking the net off its moorings — before wrapping the puck back in front. Waiting at the other post was Austin Dollimer for a tap in.

The Minotauros’ shutout bid was broken up by Travis Kothenbeutel with 3:46 remaining. It was a powerful one-timer from the slot where Samu Lonkila didn’t stand a chance.

“You got to fight for every inch of ice out there,” head coach Marty Murray said. “Both teams in both games had less than 30 shots. It was a battle out there.”

The No. 11-ranked Minot State women’s soccer team clinches a share of the NSIC regular-season championship with a 6-1 win over rival U-Mary.

It’s the first time for any sport at Minot State to finish atop of the conference at the end of the regular season.

Four minutes into the game, senior midfielder Dalia Tapia put MSU ahead 1-0 by scoring her first goal of the season on a looping distance shot from 30-plus yards out that went in off the goalkeeper’s hands.

The floodgates opened. Six different Beavers scored the six goals. Also finding the back of the net was Chloe Melton, Meagan Kawahara, Ninfa Ramirez, Ryann Rafferty and Kayla Howard.

The goal for Ramirez broke her own school record for goals scored in a season (17).

“It was fun and a great day,” MSU coach Jason Spain said. “It was nice to get a big lead and give everyone a little piece of the pie. I saw the alumni trickling out of the stands and onto the field afterward… I have already received about 30 texts from former players across the country.”

The No. 2-seeded Bishop Ryan boys basketball team survives an opening-round scare from No. 7-seeded Lewis & Clark/Berthold in the District 12 Tournament.

Game on the line, LCB sophomore Jacob Gunderson launched an NBA 3-pointer at the buzzer. The front of the rim rejected what would have been a memorable upset win.

The Lions escaped its close brush with danger to nab a 42-41 victory.

“We talked about putting ourselves in a position to win a game,” Ryan head coach Jeremy Feller said. “Down one with 25 seconds left and a one-and-one at the free-throw line really wasn’t what I had in mind. But, I guess we made it work.”

Walker Wold, who finished with a game-high 18 points, hit a corner 3-pointer to put the Bombers in the catbird seat at 41-38. Berthold, however, failed to score again.

Jaxon Feller, who was all over the court, converted a layup to get the Lions within a point. He finished with 14 points, only outdone by teammate Conner Thompson who notched a team-high 15 points.

Brady Feller made two clutch free throws with 25.7 seconds left to give Ryan the lead back for the final time at 42-41.
