The Minot State softball team uses a seventh-inning rally to beat Minnesota Duluth, 8-7, in Game 1 of a doubleheader inside the MSU air-supported dome. The Bulldogs recovered for an 8-2 win in the nightcap.

In Game 1, the Beavers trailed 7-1 after the fourth inning. Things were looking bleak but then ignited for six runs in the fifth inning.

Tori Zimmermann drove in two runs with a double to left center, Camille Green hit a grounder off UMD pitcher Valerie Hohol for an RBI and Skylar Neubauer provided an RBI ground out.

Lastly, No. 9 hitter Dakota DeLong — playing in her second collegiate game — drove a ball to deep left field that was dropped to even the score at 7-7.

Isis Cabral drove in the game-winning run on a single in the sixth.

“Honestly, it felt really good,” Zimmermann said. “We were down 7-1 and there wasn’t any negativity in the dugout. Everyone was relaxed and we knew that we could do it.”

A week removed playing in the Class B volleyball state tournament championship game, a handful of heartbroken Our Redeemer’s Knights had shifted focus to a new sport.

After coming agonizingly close to capturing the school’s first state title, they were back on the hardwood. But, instead of spiking down volleyballs, they were dribbling basketballs.

There were 10 players (out of 13) on the ORCS basketball roster who were on the court at the Fargodome for the state title game, including the Class B Senior Athlete of the Year in Morgan Olson.

“Obviously, I want to keep up my points per game and do the most I can for my team,” said Olson, who averaged 24.5 points per game as a junior. “It’s been a rough week, honestly. Two hour practices and a lot of conditioning – it’s crazy how different being in volleyball shape is compared to basketball shape – but we have worked hard and gotten to the gym.”

The three other senior captains alongside Olson were Lauren Hendrickson, Makayla Gartner and Calissa Ree.

With a spot in the Region 6 volleyball championship game up for grabs, Rugby and Des-Lacs Burlington went to a decisive fifth set. After 177 points had been scored, the first to score 15 more was moving on.

After feeding Brooke Blessum over and over again, the Panthers went to another Brooke — outside hitter Brooke Anderson — for the final blow.

As the ball bounced off the floor, the Panthers jumped into the air.

The marathon match was over with Rugby winning in five sets by scores of 23-25, 25-21, 25-16, 17-25, 15-8.

Blessum finished a match-high 31 kills, while setter Sarah Blessum tossed up 47 assists.

The win set Rugby up for another rematch against Our Redeemer’s. The team they lost to in the regional semifinals the year before.

“This is absolutely amazing,” Sarah Blessum said. “Last year, we didn’t make it. But now we finally did.”

DLB had a trio of attackers reach double-digits in kills: Kayli Olson (15), Krysta Berard (14) and Zoey Reed (10).
