Minotauros eliminated from virtual NAHL playoffs

Trying to replicate real-life history from 2018, the North Dakota Warthogs couldn’t repeat the Minot Minotauros’ comeback from down 2-1 in the series to the upset the Aberdeen Wings in the first round of the NAHL Robertson Cup playoffs.

The Minotuaros/ Warthogs bowed out of the virtual NAHL playoffs on Tuesday with a 3-1 loss in Game 4 to the Aberdeen “South Dakota” Wings.

The NHL18 video game simulation allowed Minot to win Game 1, but the Wings rattled off three straight wins to advance to the next round.

The commentator’s jinx debacle surfaced again in the opening period. After Minotauros game day operations manager Peter Theodos spoke a goal into existence in Game 3 on Sunday, Minotauros play-by-play announcer Ken Oda tested his luck on Tuesday in Game 4.

“Not to jinx it, but I don’t think we have had a scoreless period in this series yet,” Oda said on the Minotauros’ livestream broadcast.

Oda nearly escaped his choice of words. But, with 13.8 seconds left in the first period, the Wings scored the opening goal courtesy of Riley Murphy.

“That’s on you,” Theodos said.

The Minotauros/ Warthogs rebounded quickly with a rebound goal from Jay Buchholz 47 seconds into the second period. Real-life Buchholz joined the pre-game show before the broadcast to talk about the regular season and a handful of other topics.

But, back to the video game, Clayton Cosentino beat goaltender Ben Garrity glove-side to give the Wings a 2-1 lead going into the third period.

Minot wasn’t able to capitalize on a late power play, and Jordan Randall added an empty-net goal with 23.7 seconds remaining to virtually end the Minotauros/Warthogs’ virtual run, 3-1, in Game 4 and the series.

Aberdeen advances to face the Austin Bruins in the second round.
