Alex’s Tale of the Tape #2,196, Date: Dec. 28, 2019

The opening game of the Dale Brown Classic boys basketball holiday tournament took a drastic turn after the first four minutes of the first quarter. New Town scored the first seven points, but the Velva Aggies erased the early deficit and never looked back for a 54-35 win.

Velva junior forward Adam Schepp was the energizer with a team-high 16 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the floor. The Aggies’ key to success was simple, in the words of Schepp: “We were spreading the ball and playing our game. We slowed it down and were shooting the ball.”

Foul trouble and turnovers plague the Majettes basketball team in a 59-51 cross-conference loss to Devils Lake. The Firebirds employed a full-court press to harass the Majettes into multiple mistakes.

MHS senior center Brenna Tschetter scored a team-high 17 points while sophomore forward Allie Nelson chipped in with 12 first-half points.

“They just sped us up and made us make stupid decisions,” Nelson said about the Firebirds’ pressure. “They also got to the (free) throw line way too much and made their free throws.”

The Souris Valley Sabre Dogs rack up 10 stolen bases in a 5-3 Expedition League win over the Whiskey Jacks. Center fielder speedster Phillip Childs ran rampant with four stolen bases while batting 4-for-5 at the plate.

Sabre Dogs head coach Corey Thompson was basically giving everybody the green light.

“That’s what we did last year (stealing bases), and tonight we kind of showed it,” Thompson said. “We just made stuff happen. Guys are getting more comfortable with that and are starting to learn that I won’t get mad at them if they get thrown out.”
