Alex’s Tale of the Tape #1,971, Date: Sept. 17, 2019

Our Redeemer’s volleyball coach Kara Nunziato recaps a hard-fought battle with North Star in an unusually hot ORCS gymnasium. The Knights, who were placing ice packs on their heads during timeouts, won the heated affair in four sets by scores of 22-25, 25-18, 25-13, 25-16.

“Mental toughness is definitely a factor when you are playing, and you feel uncomfortable,” Nunziato said. “But, at the same time, it forces you to be more focused. All summer long, we played in a lot of hot weather, so I guess you could say we have been conditioned a little bit.”

Alex’s Tale of the Tape #1,242, Date: July 29, 2018

Renville County baseball coach Toby Routledge reflects on the Muskrats beating the Burlington Bulldogs 3-0 to win the Northwest Region championship and punching their ticket to the American Legion Class B State Tournament.

Renville County lost to Burlington the day before in a heartbreaker, 8-7, but regrouped in a hurry and won the regional championship series over the host Bulldogs. Pitcher Talon Thompson played a large part in that by throwing a complete-game shutout, allowing just five hits.

“He kept mixing his fastball with his curveball, and that kept them off-balance,” Routledge said about Thompson. “He was really on tonight. It’s just a matter of keeping him fresh because he gets winded pretty easily. But, it means the world to us for him to come in and pitch like that because after him, I don’t know, I was going to have to find out who was going to come in.”

Alex’s Tale of the Tape #899, Date: Jan. 23, 2018

The annual boys basketball regular-season rivalry showdown between in-city foes Bishop Ryan and Our Redeemer’s concludes with the Lions coming out on top 66-45.

In a unique situation, both head coaches found themselves coaching against their former team from a season ago. Ryan head coach Jeremy Feller was the former head coach at ORCS, and first-year Knights head coach Mark LaCroix was a former assistant coach at Ryan.

After the final buzzer, LaCroix put the crosstown loss into perspective.

“It’s tough to lose a game like this,” he said. “It’s a fun atmosphere and at the end of the game, yeah, we ended up losing pretty big. But, at the same time, you still shake those kids’ hands, and you recognize that they are still good people over there. I got to work with all of those kids over there. It’s a tough loss. I want to see them again.”
