MSU men’s hockey completes sweep on senior day

The No. 5-ranked Minot State men’s hockey team needed a pair of third-period goals on Saturday to complete a two-game weekend sweep against the University of Colorado.

Wayde Johannesson and Jordan Robertson provided the timely goals, which secured a 3-1 win. Not quite the comfy 9-1 margin the Beavers won by on Friday night but, regardless, the two wins improved Minot State’s record to 15-4-3 against ACHA Division I opponents this season.

It was only fitting that senior captain Blake Fournier opened the scoring Saturday on senior day. Paul O’Connor and Alex Bechtold assisted Fournier’s eighth goal of the season.

Colorado (1-24-3) found the equalizer halfway through the second period courtesy of Thomas Kleinman.

Eight penalties were called in the third period. Johannesson’s game-winning goal was an even-strength tally, but Robertson added the insurance goal on a power play.

MSU outshot Colorado heavily, 63-15. MSU goaltender Holden Kurtz made 14 saves.

The Beavers take on rival U-Mary next weekend in a home-and-home series. MSU will host a 7:30 p.m. contest Friday evening at Maysa Arena before traveling to Bismarck on Saturday.
