Minot’s Haley Conklin finishes 11th at Kim Lupo Memorial

Jimmy Lafakis/MDN Minot seventh-grader Haley Conklin leaps during the vault event at the Kim Lupo Memorial at Gymagic Gymnastics on Friday. Conklin finished 11th overall.

As seventh-grader Haley Conklin began her floor routine during Friday’s Kim Lupo Memorial, a smattering of adoring fans fervently chanted her name.

Conklin, Minot’s lone gymnast this season, finished in 11th place in the all-around standings in Minot’s only home meet at Gymagic Gymnastics. Dickinson won the meet with 146.475 points, while Minot (33.85 points) finished seventh in the overall team standings.

“It’s a unique experience,” Conklin said about representing Minot’s gymnastics team. “There’s not a lot of times where it happens that you’re the only one on the team. It’s kind of nice to see how the other teams work together and see how we can build our team to be just like them.”

Conklin did not finish below 16th in any of the individual events. She finished 12th in the floor category, posting a final score of 8.900.

The seventh-grader earned another 12th-place finish on beam, tallying a total of 8.675.

“She had a good diving season in the fall,” Minot head coach Robbie Werchau said of Conklin. “She came to gymnastics and got in shape again. That’s what happens, you kind of lose gymnastics shape so you get back into shape. Now, she’s just gotten stronger. Definitely physically, and I think she feels a lot more confident in what she’s doing against the other girls from the other schools.”

After recording a 7.875 on bars and finishing in 16th place, Conklin contributed an 8.4 on vault and tied for 16th.

The young Minot fans held up their signs and cheered for her throughout the invite.

“It’s nice to have everybody come, watch and support,” Conklin said. “It’s really encouraging, and it makes me want to try even harder than I have before.”

Jamestown will host WDA Regionals at 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 21.

“Even though (Conklin) is one, she’s mighty,” Werchau said. “She’s been great.”
