Majettes hockey wins first state tournament game since 2006

FARGO — The 14-year curse has been lifted.

The Minot High School girls hockey team won its first state tournament game since 2006 with a 3-1 victory over Fargo North/South Thursday evening in Fargo.

The No. 6-seeded Majettes (12-9-2) advanced to state semifinals.

It wasn’t a pretty start, as Josie Hell scored 47 seconds into the contest to give No. 3 Fargo North/South (17-5-2) a 1-0 lead.

Abby Tallman, assisted by Alyssa Aguirre and O’Malley Eslinger, answered a little over a minute later for the Majettes.

Tallman then assisted Taylyn Cope to give Minot a 2-1 lead going into the second period.

On the power play in the third period, Tallman delivered the much-needed insurance goal. Eslinger picked up the assist.

MHS goaltender Amber Borkhuis stopped 24 shots.

Fargo North/South outshot Minot 25-10.

The Majettes will face the five-time defending state champions, the No. 2-seeded Bismarck Blizzard, in the semifinals at 2:15 p.m. this afternoon. The game will be played at the Scheels Arena in Fargo.

Magi hockey ousted 9-1 by Bruins in state first round

FARGO — Fargo South/Shanley forward Alex Senf had a hat trick just past the halfway point of Thursday’s first-round state tournament game against the Minot High School boys hockey team.

The West Region No. 3-seeded Magicians (18-7-0) didn’t have the firepower to hang with the East Region No. 2-seeded Bruins (19-5-1). Fargo South/Shanley scored four goals in the second and third periods, en route to a 9-1 win, to end Minot’s hopes of winning a state title this season.

The score was knotted at 1-1 after the first period. Senf scored 4:11 into the contest, but Minot’s Jack Plemel had the answer.

The Magicians couldn’t get another puck past stellar FSS goaltender Zach Sandy. He made 18 saves in the contest.

Senf’s hat trick was almost matched by Jake Bryant’s two goals in the third period. Drew Sandy also had two goals. Carson Dean and Caleb Flanagan each scored once.

MHS goaltender Tre Sortland made 19 saves before giving way to backup Noah Conklin, who made nine saves.

The Bruins outshot the Magi 37-20.

Minot drops into a consolation semifinal this morning at 11 a.m. against West Region rival Bismarck Century. The two last met on Jan. 7, where Minot won 3-0.

West Region Tournament champions Century lost to East Region No. 4-seeded Fargo Davies, 6-0, in the opening round of the state tournament.

Fargo South/Shanley advances to face Fargo Davies in the state semifinals.
