Magi hockey defeats Dickinson 7-2, clinches WDA title

DICKINSON — Senior forward Jack Plemel helped the Minot High School boys hockey team earn the WDA regular season crown in style.

Plemel scored a hat trick for Minot (14-5, 12-1 WDA) in Saturday’s 7-2 win over Dickinson (8-9, 5-9 WDA).

Although Plemel’s first goal came in the first period, the Midgets led 2-1 after that frame. Zach Diehl and Plemel found the back of the net in the second period.

Once Minot gained the lead, the Magicians never relented. Four third-period goals helped the Magi earn the victory and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming WDA Tournament.

Isaiah Thongphet struck twice in the third period. Plemel and Benn Bonebrake recorded Minot’s other two goals.

Minot junior goaltender Tre Sortland contributed 24 saves. Joseph Pavek scored both of Dickinson’s goals.

The Magi will host Grafton-Park River on Thursday, Feb. 13. That contest was rescheduled from Jan. 18.
