Velva third, Ryan wrestling 10th at Central Cass Letterman’s Tournament

CASSELTON — After earning two team dual victories on Thursday, the Bishop Ryan wrestling team captured a 10th place finish at the Central Cass Letterman’s Tournament on Saturday. Region 3 rival Velva managed to get on the podium.

The Aggies placed third with 145 points, and Ryan finished the 26-team event with 88.5 points. Lisbon earned first place, finishing with 276 points.

Velva bolstered six placewinners: Brayden Selzler (first, 170), Gunnar Mogen (second, 126), Bransyn Yanish (third, 152), Jerimiah Jespersen (fourth, 220) and Bryce Selzler (fifth, 182).

Keegan Henjum brought home Ryan’s lone individual victory. Henjum outlasted Lisbon’s Ethan Lyons in a grueling 285-pound championship match. Henjum eventually earned the 6-5 decision over Lyons. Ryan’s standout heavyweight boosted his overall record to 27-1.

Ryan’s Octavio Alvarez finished in fourth place in the 120-pound weight class.

Noah Swegarden finished sixth in the 220-pound weight class. Oakes’ Hunter Greenmeyer earned the victory over Swegarden. The match was decided by an ultimate tiebreaker, 6-2.

Other local area placewinners included Des Lacs-Burlington’s Coy Spooner (first, 195), Harvey/Wells County’s Carson Mertz (third, 160), DLB’s Cale Ibach (fourth, 145), DLB’s Jordan Robbins (fifth, 285), Rugby’s John Jundt (sixth, 126) and Rugby’s Riley Odden (sixth, 138).
