Magi wrestling earns fifth place at Rotary Invite
BISMARCK — The Minot High School boys wrestling team faced stiff competition over the weekend, and the Magicians continued to make statements.
Minot finished in fifth place at the two-day Bismarck Rotary Invite at the Bismarck Civic Center. The Magicians’ score of 169 marked the second-highest total among North Dakota teams.
Sidney (Mont.) won the event with a score of 295.5 points. Bismarck High finished in second place with 223.5 points.
Kelby Armstrong highlighted the Magi’s performance with a win in the 132-pound championship match. Armstrong defeated Ty Althoff of Watertown (S.D.) in the final match. The Minot State commit endured for a 4-3 decision.
Fellow MSU commit, Jacob Carmichael, took second place in the 195-pound weight class. Sidney’s Jett Jones captured a 14-2 major decision victory over Carmichael in the championship round.
Trevon McClanahan contributed a third-place finish in the 145-pound weight class. That match also came down to a decision, as TJ Morrison of Rapid City Central (S.D.) earned the 7-2 win over McClanahan.
Two of Minot’s wrestlers earned top-eight finishes in the 106-pound weight class. Gabe Mortensen took home fourth place, while Jacob Schulze nabbed eighth.
Chase Burke claimed fifth place in the 160-pound weight class. Isaac Fernandez added a seventh-place finish in the 182-pound division.
The Magi will square off in a highly anticipated dual against Bismarck High at 7 p.m. on Thursday in Minot. The match will feature North Dakota’s top two teams. The dual will also mark Minot’s annual cancer match.
