Magi hockey survives close contest at Jamestown, wins 6-5

JAMESTOWN — Two WDA hockey rivals traded punches on Saturday afternoon, but the Minot High School boys hockey team came out on top.

Minot (7-3, 5-1 WDA) earned a narrow 6-5 road victory over Jamestown (6-3, 4-3 WDA). The Magicians avenged their 3-2 loss to the Blue Jays back on Dec. 21.

Minot’s Jayden Luck finished the night with a hat trick. Luck scored twice in the first period and eventually scored the game-winning goal late in the contest.

Jamestown’s Nolan Nenow scored one goal in the first period and another in the second period. Zach Diehl and Riley Opperude scored for the Magicians in the second period, but Corey Nelson added a goal for the Blue Jays.

With the action heating up in the third period, Diehl struck again. Diehl’s second goal came after 10:47 had elapsed in the period.

Jamestown’s Hunter Nelson found the back of the net just over two minutes later, but Luck went between the posts for the final time with just under three minutes to play.

The teams split the home-and-home season series, with each squad winning on the other’s home ice. The Magi will host Fargo Davies (6-2) at 4 p.m. Saturday at Maysa Arena.
