Magi basketball rallies past Turtle Mountain, 90-77

Brandon Carr/MDN Minot High senior Jaxon Gunville (24) rises up for a shot against Turtle Mountain Community High School on Tuesday evening in Minot. Gunville had a team-high 38 points.

Before the opening tip, Minot High School boys basketball coach Dean Winczewski made a shocking announcement that long-time radio broadcaster and play-by-play announcer Scott Kittell was calling his last game in front of the Magi faithful. After a standing ovation, the air seemed to have left the building.

The Magicians (8-2, 7-2 WDA) started slow but went into halftime with a 39-37 lead against Turtle Mountain Community High School. They went on to win 90-77.

“We struggled with effort on defense but did enough down the stretch to get away with it,” Winczewski said. “We have to find a toughness and an attitude to want to get better.”

Minot High senior sharpshooter Jaxon Gunville provided most of the scoring (38 points) knocking down four three-pointers, 16 free throws while adding nine rebounds and five assists in the victory.

Senior guard Tucker Olson finished with 15 points while senior big man Easton Larson added 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Grant Birkland (20 points) Tristan Davis (19 points) and Keisin Peltier (16 points) all scored in double figures for TMCHS.

Minot High will host Williston at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
