Magi basketball races past Mandan, wins 104-55

MANDAN — The halftime score between the Minot High School boys basketball team and the Mandan Braves read 51-30 in Minot’s favor.

From there, the Magicians (7-1, 6-1 WDA) kept their foot on the gas. Minot earned a 104-55 victory over the Braves (3-4, 3-3 WDA) in Mandan on Tuesday night. Minot senior guard Jaxon Gunville scored a game-high 38 points — six points shy of tying the school record for most points in a game.

“Our kids executed extremely well,” Minot head coach Dean Winczewski said. “We didn’t allow (Mandan) to make a run.”

Four Magicians joined Gunville in double figures. Senior guard Tucker Olson (17 points), senior center Easton Larson (16 points), senior center Caden Johnson (10 points) and junior guard Deonte’ Martinez (10 points) all provided major offensive contributions.

The Magicians shot 71% (30-of-41) on 2-pointers and 57% (12-21) on three-pointers. Minot also earned a 32-14 edge on the glass.

Minot dished out 26 assists, while Mandan mustered just seven.

“I’m proud of our effort,” Winczewski said. “But now, we have to go back to work.”

Minot will host Bismarck High (5-2, 4-2 WDA) for a 7:30 p.m. contest on Friday.
