Magi basketball drops 67-58 decision to Mandan

Jimmy Lafakis/MDN Minot High freshman forward Darik Dissette (42) drives the ball past Mandan junior guard Jayce Lowman (13) in the first half of Friday's game in Minot. Dissette scored four points in the Magicians' 67-58 loss.

When the Minot High School boys basketball team met up with the Mandan Braves on Jan. 7, the Magicians earned a 104-55 road victory.

The Braves were determined to flip the script on Friday night. Mandan (7-6, 7-5 WDA) kept the Minot (10-3, 9-3 WDA) offense in check during the 67-58 contest.

“They were just more aggressive than we were,” Minot head coach Dean Winczewski said of the Braves. “They deserved to win.”

Mandan blazed out of the gates, eventually obtaining an 11-2 advantage. The Magicians cut the deficit to 30-27 by halftime, but the Braves made their presence felt.

Elijah Klein led the Braves with 16 points. Mandan limited Minot senior guard Jaxon Gunville to 19 points on 5-of-12 shooting.

“We’ve got to do a better job as a team,” Winczewski said.

The Magi shot 4-of-17 (24%) from the 3-point line and 14-of-22 (64%) from the charity stripe. Mandan converted its field goals at a 50% clip, and found the bottom of the net on eight of its 18 3-point attempts.

All three of the Magi’s losses have come on their home floor.

Minot will travel south for a 7:45 p.m. showdown against WDA rival Bismarck High (8-3, 7-3 WDA) next Tuesday. The Demons picked up a 83-77 win over the Magi in the teams’ Jan. 10 meeting.
