Borkhuis shutout, outburst of goals carries Majettes hockey over Mandan

Alex Eisen/MDN Majettes senior forward Carson Abrahamson (8) looks to pass the puck up ice to senior teammate Kaya Shaw (7) Tuesday evening against Mandan at Maysa Arena.

Amber Borkhuis was unbeatable between the pipes for a third straight game. The Minot High School junior goalie stopped 14 shots — only facing one shot in the third period — to secure a 7-0 victory Tuesday evening against Mandan at Maysa Arena.

Six of the Majettes’ goals came in the third period.

Over the last three games, Minot High (7-4-1, 5-4-1 N.D. League) has outscored their opponents 23-0, with Borkhuis collecting three consecutive shutouts in the process.

“What more can you even say about her?” MHS co-head coach Chris Stokke said about Borkhuis. “She is a heck of a goaltender, and she is there for us every single night. She comes prepared. Great to have her on the team, always relying on her, absolutely.”

The Majettes got themselves in trouble early with a pair of penalties, which gifted Mandan (6-9-0, 5-8-0 N.D. League) a 5-on-3 power play for 52 seconds.

Minot killed it off without any problems and, with 50.7 seconds left in the opening period, did its own damage with an extra skater.

MHS senior forward Carson Abrahamson banged in a power-play tally from the side of the net. Her third goal of the season, assisted by Brenna Abrahamson, gave the Majettes a 1-0 lead going into the first intermission.

“The net was wide-open and right there for me,” Carson Abrahamson said. “I just took the shot.”

Minot spent the majority of a scoreless second period in Mandan’s defensive zone.

The best scoring chance of the middle frame came in the final minute when MHS freshman Taylyn Cope whacked the post from a tight angle. The ringing echoed throughout Maysa Arena.

Despite controlling the flow of the action, the Majettes only had a slim one-goal cushion going to the third period.

“We got away from our game a little bit,” Stokke said. “We were surrounding the net, but we adapted in the third. We knew we had use our defensemen more. They were giving us the front of the net, but their goalie played really well — credit to her. We just adapted.”

The floodgates opened drastically in the third period.

A minute into the period, Kaya Shaw provided a much-deserved insurance goal, which ended up sparking an onslaught.

Junior defender Alyssa Enns provided goal No. 3 from the blue line on a power play. Then, Carson Abrahamson sniped her second goal of the game.

“We just kept going and burying them,” Carson Abrahamson said. “We got a lot of greasy ones tonight. The dirty ones, and that’s how you win.”

Wanting in on the goal-scoring fun, two Majettes scored their first career goal for the team.

First was junior defender Tatum Stebleton with 4:47 remaining. Then, a minute and a half later, former goalie Madison Knudson found the back of the net for the first time.

Picking up her first career assist on Knudson’s goal was junior forward Jacie Fagerland.

“Everyone is really excited for them,” Enns said. “And we are excited to see what is still to come.”

Enns capped the scoring with a power-play goal with under two minutes remaining. Her second goal of the game and only her third goal of the season.

“My adrenaline is pumping right now,” Enns said. “I could go play another game. It’s so cool to see everyone’s hard work paying off.”

The Majettes outshot Mandan 46-14. Jayli Wandler made 39 saves for the Braves.

“We had a full team buy-in,” Stokke said. “We struggled a little bit in the first and second periods, but the team came together and performed. They worked their hearts out.”

The Majettes end their five-game homestand this weekend with games against Grand Forks Central on Friday at 5 p.m. and Devils Lake on Saturday at 2 p.m.
