Region 6 GBB preview capsules for 2019-20 season

The North Dakota Class B girls basketball season is underway. Here is an overview of all the teams (listed in alphabetical order) competing for the Region 6 crown.

District 12

Bishop Ryan Lions

Coach: Roger Coleman (2nd season).

Last season record: 9-13, Region 6 qualifier.

Key players gone: Sealy Rovig, Sidney Lovelace, Abbie McKay.

Key returners: Maya Wald, Sr., G; Grace Candrian, Sr., G; Nora Kramer, Jr., G; Sylvie Kramer, Jr., G.

Coach’s comment: “I look forward to my second season with these girls and seeing how far we can go on top of the improvement from last year. We had a rough start to the season, but put together a pretty decent winning streak and gave the eventual Class B runner-up a battle in the first round of the region tournament.”

Des Lacs-Burlington Lakers

Coach: Tracy Bonn (4th season).

Last season record: 16-6, Region 6 qualifier.

Key players gone: Kyley Lauf.

Coach’s comment: “We are extremely athletic in almost every position. We can be very versatile with our lineup.”

Glenburn Panthers

Coach: Jordan Pederson.

Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood Mavericks

Coach: Wayne Brackenbury (27th season)

Last season record: 22-3, District 12 winner, Region 6 third place.

Coach’s comment: “We have experience with everyone returning. Leah Feland is our leading scorer and has been for the past two years. We have a nice balance of size with Allison Undlin being 6-foot-2… We like to think we have decent speed and play pretty good defense. We have been through the ups and downs as this group of seniors were 5-16 as freshmen playing against varsity.”

Our Redeemer’s Knights

Coach: Scott Peterson.

Last season record: 12-10.

Key players gone: Tessa Olson.

Coach’s comment: “We will be an athletic team this year with good team chemistry. Senior guard/forward Hailey Roberts, joins the Knights bring good leadership and athleticism. We hope to push deep in the region this year with all of our leadership and experience.”

South Prairie Royals

Coach: Justin Lauf.

Last season record: 4-17.

Surrey Mustangs

Coach: Ronald Aberle (1st season).

Last season record: 8-13.

Coach’s comment: “We have no seniors but we have a group of juniors and freshmen who have played a lot of basketball. We can play with size and work the ball inside or we can go with speed and run with the ball.”

District 11

Bottineau Stars

Coach: Michael Vandal (5th season).

Coach’s comment: “This group is very motivated from the tough year we had last year. They have come together on the court but more importantly off the court. They come to practice everyday with a purpose to get better and play together. This is a great group of kids that is playing with a chip on their shoulders.”

Drake-Anamoose Raiders

Coach: Chris Arnold.

Last season record: 1-20.

Nedrose Cardinals

Coach: Matt Hanson (1st season).

Coach’s comment: “The team is young and is gradually gaining more experience. They are in a new system and learning new things. Looking forward to see how they progress throughout the season.”

Rugby Panthers

Coach: Jen Brossart (13th season).

Last season record: 22-5, Region 6 winner, State runner-up.

Key players gone: Anni Stier, Karsyn Hager, Maria Blessum.

Key returners: Brooke Blessum, Jr., C; Sarah Blessum, Jr., G; Isabella McCabe, Jr., F.

Coach’s comment: “Will take part of the season to establish their own identity. Will go through some growing pains at the beginning of the season until they start to gel together. They played a lot of summer basketball together and learned to play with a whole different nucleus of players. The program has 24 girls out for basketball with no seniors on the team.”

Towner-Granville-Upham Titans

Coach: Malcolm Marcus (4th season).

Last season record: 12-10, Region 6 qualifier.

Key players gone: Allison Cross, Grace Bachmeier.

Key returners: Jaidyn Brummond, Sr, C; Neeleigh Wollenzien, Sr., G; Mackenzie Woodall, Sr., F.

Coach’s comment: “Other players who will see plenty of time are senior Dawson Neshem, and juniors Grace Schmitt, Lita Prellwitz, Kendra Kuhnhenn, and Melanie Fosness. Lots of experience back so we are optimistic as the season nears.”

Velva Aggies

Coach: Chris Braaten.

Last season record: 22-3, District 11 winner, Region 6 runner-up.

Key players gone: Rachel Mack, Jazmine Beardsley, Hope Brewer.

Westhope/Newburg Sioux

Coach: Bob Beaudrie (2nd season).

Coach’s comment: “We are going to miss Harley’s scoring abilities, leadership and rebounding. The rest of the girls are going to have to make up for that loss. Our goal is to be a solid defensive unit and create havoc and turnovers in order to provide scoring opportunities for ourselves.”
