Majettes hockey falls 6-0 to Blizzard in season opener

BISMARCK –The Bismarck Blizzard did not hesitate Tuesday evening

The Blizzard’s bevy of strikes granted a 6-0 win over the Minot High School girls hockey team. Bismarck (1-0) scored two goals in each period, giving Minot (0-1) its first loss of the season.

After Eva Churchill found the back of the net during the first period’s 3:08 mark, teammate Riley Ball wanted in on the fun. Ball (8:54) scored the Blizzard’s second goal of the frame after an assist from Madison Brown.

Paige Hanson (1:26) and Noelle Martin teamed up for another score in the second period. Cameron Schmidt (13:23) received assists from Brown and Greta Tschnider on her goal.

“We made too many mistakes against a good team that capitalized on opportunities,” Minot co-head coach MaKayla Sandvold said.

With the Blizzard leading 4-0, Ball (0:47) tacked on her second goal of the night. Anna German and Schmidt teamed up for the assists.

Not to be outdone, Churchill bookended her evening with a final score at the 1:12 mark. Minot goalkeeper Amber Borkhuis finished her day with 27 saves, while Bismarck goaltender Lauren Watkins saved 22 shots.

Each team committed four penalties.

The Majettes will play a 7 p.m. contest on Dec. 6 at Burdick Arena in Devils Lake, while the Blizzard will face Fargo Davies at 3 p.m. on Dec. 7 at Scheels Arena.
