MSU volleyball swept by No. 6 Northern State

Alex Eisen/MDN Minot State senior Hayley Swain (6) rises up to attack the ball Tuesday evening against No. 6-ranked Northern State inside the MSU Dome.

Donning pink jerseys for breast cancer awareness month, the injury-riddled Minot State volleyball team couldn’t steal a set off No. 6-ranked Northern State Tuesday evening in Minot.

Minot State (1-17, 0-9 NSIC) dropped its 11th straight conference contest, dating back to last season, as Northern State (15-2, 8-1 NSIC) won by set scores of 25-13, 25-20, 25-15.

The Beavers’ best opportunity to rattle a high-powered opponent came in the middle frame. MSU jumped out to a 7-2 lead and distanced themselves from a lopsided 25-13 first-set defeat.

Senior Hayley Swain powered down a point-blank return kill at the net to keep MSU up five points, 14-9, halfway through the set.

The Wolves flipped momentum in a hurry with five straight points.

Last tied at 18-18, Northern State put MSU away with its lethal attack that finished with a .319 attack percentage. The Wolves only had one attack error in the first and third sets.

Jenna Reiff finished with a match-high 14 kills for the Wolves.

MSU’s offense went through senior Shelby Spuller, who racked up 10 kills on 33 attack attempts. Minot High product Caitlyn Messner (seven kills) and Swain (six kills) each finished with an efficient .455 attack percentage.

Messner, a true freshman, was making her first home appearance as the Beavers are playing without regulars Jeanne Brenner, Nicole Wondrasek and Amarrie Welton due to injuries.

MSU setter Mackenzie Froehlich tossed up 23 assists and junior libero Karli Koza picked up a team-high 11 digs.

The Beavers have two more NSIC home games this weekend against No. 5-ranked Concordia-St. Paul at 5 p.m. on Friday and Minnesota State at noon on Saturday.
