Magi football earns close victory in Jamestown

JAMESTOWN — After some early back-and-forth action, the Minot High School football team found its stride against the Jamestown Blue Jays.

The 3-3 Magicians (2-2 WDA) and 2-4 Blue Jays (1-3 WDA) finished the first quarter knotted at 7-7. In the second quarter, Minot senior quarterback Jaxon Gunville found senior tight end Quaid Frantsvog for a 26-yard touchdown.

“It was a hard-fought game,” Minot head coach Barry Holmen said. “We got all we can handle. We know we have to get a lot better.”

Jamestown struck back with a touchdown, but Minot nursed a slim 14-13 lead heading into the half. The Blue Jays bobbled a snap on the extra point attempt after the touchdown.

Neither team scratched in the third quarter, but Gunville found senior wide receiver Logan Fisher for a 60-yard score early in the fourth.

Minot’s defense held, and the Magi earned the 21-13 victory in Jamestown.

“We’re delighted to get out of here with a win,” Holmen said. “We have a quick turnaround, so we will go right back to work.”

Minot will travel to the Bismarck Community Bowl at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 10. The Magi will match up with the Bismarck High Demons.
