Burlington overpowers Scobey in District 2 semifinal
BURLINGTON — With the wind swirling, the No. 3-seeded Burlington Bulldogs built up a 10-2 lead over the top-seeded Scobey Blues (Montana) in a crucial American Legion Class B District 2 semifinal contest Friday in Burlington.
The Blues battled back with a six-run sixth inning, but the Bulldogs ran away again for a 16-8 victory.
Burlington scored seven runs in the first two innings to aid starting pitcher Brayden Bonn. The first frame a run didn’t score was in the bottom of the third inning.
Scobey rallied when all seemed lost in the sixth. Hit after hit, the Blues trimmed a 10-2 deficit to 10-8 and left the tying runner on base.
The Bulldogs broke out the bats once again for four more runs in the seventh to put the game away for good, 16-8.
Burlington advances to the championship series and only needs one more win to punch its spot into the American Legion Class B State Tournament being held July 31 through August 4 in Hazen.
Joining the Bulldogs in the championship series will be the winner of today’s 1 p.m. game between Scobey and Crosby.
The first championship game will be played at 3:30 p.m. this afternoon with an if-necessary second championship game being played Sunday at 1 p.m. All of the games are in Burlington, not Stanley as originally planned.
