KOTTSICK: Only the best come north

The 2019 Armed Forces Championship was recently held at the Falcon Dunes Golf Course at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona. Air Force men captured the top five spots and the Army ladies dominated the girls division by 54 shots. The Air Force men have won eight of the last 10 contests of this prestigious event. Their score this year was 1369, an amazing 51-under par.

Air Force captain Kyle Westmoreland of the US. Air Force Academy, led their team with a score of 271 (-13). Captain Andrew Fecteau of the Minot Air Force Base finished in second place, one shot back behind Westmoreland.

I have had the great pleasure to get to know Andrew these past few seasons and he is a super golfer and a true gentleman with a great golf game. He is a credit to the Air Force and one of the nicest people I have met. He is very unassuming and has confidence in his strong golf game.

This fall Andrew and his Air Force team will be competing in the 7th Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) Military World Games held in Wuham, China. Another interesting connection to MAFB is the Air Force team’s coach. Dough Quirie, a former service member at MAFB will be the coach of this years Air Force team. Quirie used to play a lot of golf at Souris Valley and the MAFB.

I know the city of Minot and all of our area golfers will be pulling for Andrew and the Air Force team this fall and will be wishing them the best of luck.

Tip of the week: Check you ball position on all of you golf shots and develop a pre-shot routine and keep you ball positions consistent.

Rule of the Week: The new drop procedure is to drop from knee height.

This is the opinion of Steve Kottsick. He is the Director of Golf for the Souris Valley Golf Course in Minot.
