Haas takes first in action-packed afternoon at Nodak Speedway

With things beginning to unravel, Trevor Haas did what anybody would do: He sang a tune.

The Minot native, driving the No. 99H car, was a blue-and-orange blur in the main feature of the Hobby class on Sunday as he started the race in the front of the pack and kept his competitors in the rearview mirror.

But the final stretch was anything but a scenic route. Haas began to miss his marks during the last 10 laps, and his car was now running hot.

Then, the red flag came out.

Fellow Minot native Austin Green’s No. 11A car got spun around with six laps to go and smoke began to emit from his hood, forcing the rest of the racers to come to a complete standstill. It took around five minutes for Green’s vehicle to be towed away, leaving Haas with time to regroup for the final few laps.

With a little time on his hands, the speedster played “Gold” by Sir Sly in his head to ease his nerves.

“(The song) kind of calms me down,” Haas said. “I was just mainly focused on getting my car to cool down, but the flag gave me some time.”

Sure enough, Haas went right back to work when the race started up again. Although his lead was now gone, it didn’t take but a lap and a half for him to regain a comfortable edge over the rest of the pack and ultimately secure the win.

Having not raced in 2018, the victory marks Haas’ first win since 2017.

“It feels good,” Haas said. “To pull off a win here at Nodak is an accomplishment because there are 15 guys out there that can win on any given night. To be able to hold off some of the fastest guys out there is a great accomplishment.”

Two other racers joined Haas in the winner’s circle on Sunday, as the 2 Strong Sportmod Series unfolded at Nodak Speedway.

Also claiming first place was Mike Hagen in the Stock Cars class, who had to outrace two fellow Williston natives. Hagen, driving the No. 27X car, took first while Dalton Flory claimed second and Joe Flory earned third place.

The third winner of the afternoon was Chase Conway in the Sport mods class. The Westhope native denied Minot native Robby Rosselli of his second main feature win this season by claiming first place. Rosselli finished second.

Next up on the schedule for Nodak Speedway is the continuation of the Magic City Dirt Series next Sunday at 7 p.m.
