Majettes tennis advances six to Day 2 of WDA Individual Tourney
Due to persistent rain in Minot, the girls tennis West Region Individual Tournament was moved to Cameron Indoor Tennis Center Friday in Minot. Due to the shortage of courts, the first day only consisted of the first and second rounds.
The Majettes are advancing six athletes to the second day of the tournament, which will resume Saturday at Hammond Park and Roosevelt Park in Minot.
Singles
Minot senior Raquel Egge, coming into the singles championship as the No. 1-seed, played one match Friday to advance to the quarterfinal round. She receieved a bye through the first round and defeated Mandan’s Kenzie Ulrich in straight sets to advance out of the second round. Egge will face Legacy’s Sierra Knoll today at 9 a.m. in the quarterfinals.
Playing early in the morning was Valeria Cevallos, who faced Century’s Riley Lembke. Cevallos claimed the first set, 6-4, but fell to the consolation bracket when Lembke bounced back to win the following sets. Cevallos moved on to the consolation bracket while Lembke moved on to the second round.
Sydney Fettig faced St. Mary’s Olivia Anderson in the first round, and advanced after winning in straight sets. In the second round, Fettig faced Legacy’s Hannah Felt and fell in three sets. Fettig fell to the consolation bracket, while Felt will advance to the quarterfinals Saturday.
Fettig and Cevallos then squared off in the consolation bracket. Fettig defeated Cevallos in straight sets and will advance to the third round of the consolation bracket and will be fighting for a state qualifying spot. Fettig will face Bismarck High’s Peyton Neumiller at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Doubles
Both doubles teams for Minot stayed alive in the doubles championship Friday at Cameron Indoor.
Joelle Fettig and Eden Olson, seeded fifth, played their first and only match of the day against Jamestown’s Annie Johnson and Lauryn Hibl. The Majettes defeated the Blue Jays in straight sets. They will move on to face Bismarck High’s Sydney Helgeson and Natalie Schuh Saturday at 10 a.m.
The unseeded pair Sofia Egge and Morgan Wheeler faced Dickinson’s No. 3-seeded Lauren Jorda and Emma Dazell for a spot in the quarterfinals. The Majettes took the first set, 6-1, but the Midgets bounced back to take the second set, 6-4. With one set left, the Majettes gave it their all and powered through to a 6-1 set win, securing the match and their spot in the quarterfinals. They will face Anna Braun and Lauryn Hoesel of St. Mary’s Saturday at 10 a.m.
