Magi baseball takes both games against Bismarck St. Mary’s

BISMARCK – The Minot High School baseball team (12-8, 7-7 West Region) left no doubt Tuesday on the road as it cruised to a pair of mercy-rule victories over Bismarck St. Mary’s (0-12, 0-10 West Region).

The Magicians came out swinging in Game 1 and scored five runs in the opening inning. The highlight came from senior Alex Schimke, who went the distance on a pitch from Drew Dosch for a two-run home run.

Now leading 9-0 in the top of the fifth inning, Schimke struck again. Bismarck St. Mary’s pitcher Dawn Sardalli was the victim this time around, as the senior recorded his second two-run homer of the game to make it an 11-0 contest and ultimately force a mercy rule.

Game 2 yielded little change, as the Magi scored four runs in the opening inning to take a quick 4-1 lead. Now up 10-1 in the top of the fifth inning, Chase Burke delivered the knockout.

The sophomore recorded an RBI double that brought in none other than Schimke to push the lead to double digits and eventually force another mercy rule.

Schimke finished with five RBIs and seven runs on 5-for-7 hitting in both games combined, while Burke tallied four RBIs and two runs on 2-for-5 hitting.

Next up for the Magi is a road game against Williston on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Burke scores twice to lead Majettes soccer past St. Mary’s

BISMARCK — Two goals in the first 14 minutes by freshman winger MaLiah Burke was enough to help the Minot High School girls soccer team knock off Bismarck St. Mary’s on the road Tuesday evening by a final score of 2-1.

With the victory, the Majettes (6-1-1) avenged the 1-1 draw the two teams settled for on April 13 at the Optimist Soccer Complex in Minot.

Brooklyn Casey assisted Burke’s first goal a minute and a half into the game. Allison Lepp provided the second assist 12 minutes later.

Rachel Neff scored St. Mary’s lone goal at the 19-minute mark of the first half. A scoreless second half carried the Majettes to a crucial win.

“We were great the first 15 minutes,” MHS head coach Matt Pfau said. “Then, did enough to hold on. Good win on the road puts us in a good spot for a big game with Bismarck High on Thursday.”

Bismarck High leads the West Region standings with 21 points while the Majettes sit in second place with 19 points.

Minot heads back to the Bismarck Community Bowl on Thursday to play the Demons. Kick off is set for 6 p.m.
