Lepp’s goals lift Minot to 5-1 win over West Fargo at state

John M. Steiner / Forum News Service West Fargo's Tonje Vollan (4) gets some pressure from Morgan Perrin of Minot Thursday during the North Dakota girls state soccer tournament at Rotary Field in Jamestown.

JAMESTOWN (FNS) — All-state senior Allison Lepp buried two second-half goals in a 5-1 victory over West Fargo in Thursday’s state quarterfinals at Rotary Field. The Majettes will play Fargo Davies in Friday’s semifinals at 6:45 p.m.

“Coming in as WDA champ we definitely wanted to represent the West,” Lepp said. “Show them we can play just like the East.”

Goals by Minot’s Lainey Sandberg and Maicee Burke had the Majettes leading 2-0 at the half. Burke, just a seventh grader, assisted on Sandberg’s opening tally in the 18th minute.

“It’s definitely good to see the younger kids step up and show that our program will be good in years to come,” Lepp said. “We really utilized our wings and got to the space, and (we) used our speed to try to get the ball into the box.”

Lepp put Minot ahead 3-0 in the second before Jacie Osier brought the Packers back to within two with a tally in the 59th. But a direct free kick from the top of the penalty box to the back of the net by Lepp and a second tally by Sandberg wrapped up Minot’s fifth straight victory.

West Fargo will play in Friday’s loser-out play at 2:15 p.m.

“They’re a strong team,” West Fargo coach George Gauld said of the Majettes. “Some good scoring opportunities and they finished their chances. I wish them the best of luck the rest of the tournament.”

Minot (11-2-1) is playing its 10th state tournament in 11 seasons and is still in search of its first girls soccer state championship. The Majettes placed second to West Fargo in 2010.

“Hopefully just try our best,” Lepp said. “Put everything we practice into play and just work hard.”
