MSU baseball splits pair of games against Concordia-St. Paul in NSIC Opener

BELLEVUE, NE – The Minot State baseball team (7-7, 1-1 NSIC) broke even on Thursday in Bellevue, Nebraska, as it split a pair of games against Concordia-St. Paul to kick off conference play.

The Beavers had no trouble putting away the Golden Bears in the morning game of the double header as they shut out their NSIC competitor for a convincing 6-0 win.

Michael Borst did most of the damage at the plate. The senior went 1-for-3 and recorded two RBIs to go along with another two runs scored.

It was all Jaymon Cervantes at the mound. The senior pitched a complete game, struck out seven batters and allowed just four hits in the victory.

But the Golden Bears exacted their revenge in the afternoon game and claimed a 4-2 win. Minot State held a 1-0 lead until Concordia-St. Paul scored a total of four runs in the sixth and seventh inning to secure the victory.

Sophomore pitcher R.J. Martinez tallied seven strikeouts in six innings but allowed eight hits in the losing effort.

Next on the schedule for the Beavers is a three-game road series against Minnesota State in Mankato, Minnesota. The first two games are scheduled for today at 10 a.m. and noon, while the final match will be on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
