Moorhead’s offense too much, MSU men fall 93-78

Alex Eisen/MDN Minot State senior forward David Akibo (15) gets trapped by Minnesota State Moorhead defenders Jake Johnson (25) and Siman Sem (11) Friday evening at the Minot State Dome.

The Minnesota State Moorhead’s high-powered attack couldn’t be stopped.

The Dragons (19-10, 13-8 NSIC) surpassed their conference-leading 87.2 points per game with a 93-78 road victory over the Minot State men’s basketball team Friday evening at the MSU Dome.

“I don’t think we attacked at all defensively,” MSU head coach Matt Murken said. “We were too reactive on the defensive end. We let them dictate where the ball went and when it went there. They have enough talented guys that you can’t let them dictate the pace of the game on the offensive end.”

The Beavers (14-16, 9-12 NSIC) were looking up at a 10-point deficit, 26-16, nine minutes into the game as MSU Moorhead shot 12-for-15 from the floor to start.

A 3-pointer by Dorian Aluyi with 4:25 left in the first half pulled the Beavers back even at 32-32.

Another triple by MSU’s Drake Jeffries, plus a Moorhead 3-pointer reviewed and overturned into a two-point field goal, had the Beavers down 43-38 at halftime.

Moorhead’s Addison Park went off for 16 points in the first half. MSU’s David Akibo wasn’t far behind with 13 points.

“(Moorhead) has a team that can certainly take advantage when you are out of position,” Murken said. “We got ourselves out of position far too much to have success at the defensive end.”

Down 57-49 with 13:44 remaining, MSU guard Kyle Beisch was pleading with his teammates during a timeout to get stops.

That was easier said than done.

“We needed to find a way to dig in,” Murken said. “We needed to be more active and rotate better. In small stretches we were able to do that, but we weren’t able to do that consistently tonight.”

Moorhead shot 57.4 percent from the floor on its way to scoring 50 points in the second half. Park kept filling up the basket and finished with a game-high 30 points.

The Beavers inched within single digits a couple times but failed to close the gap completely.

Five Beavers finished in double figures: Akibo (19 points), Aluyi (17), Jeffries (14), Max Cody (10) and Beisch (10). MSU shot 50 percent from the floor.

“I don’t think we played great (offensively), but when you allow a team to score at the rate (Moorhead) did, you are going against their set defense pretty consistently,” Murken said. “That takes away the chance to get in transition and score some easy baskets. But that all starts defensively. Not enough stops.”

The Beavers close out the regular season against NSIC leaders Northern State at 5:30 p.m. this evening at the MSU Dome.

“(Northern State) is a team that has been one of the best teams in the country over the last couple of years,” Murken said. “It will be a good challenge for us and our guys enjoy challenges.”
