Magi basketball beats Bismarck, Winczewski earns win No. 300

The Minot High School boys basketball team (8-5) exacted a little revenge Tuesday on the road, defeating Bismarck High (9-4) by a score of 70-66 after falling to the Demons earlier this month.

“We fought tonight,” MHS head coach Dean Winczewski said. “We’ve lost some heartbreakers this season, and this is the first time we’ve fought for 36 (minutes). We had to fight every possession, and we made some big plays down the stretch to win.”

Bismarck got the best of Minot in the early going by jumping out to a 12-2 advantage, but the Magicians caught fire from that point on to take a 41-38 lead at halftime.

The Magi leaned on junior Jaxon Gunville and senior Alex Schimke down the stretch. The dynamic duo finished with 29 points and 21 points, respectively.

The dagger came in the closing moments when Gunville drained his seventh triple of the night to extend Minot’s lead to four and secure the 70-66 win.

“We had a lot of guys make plays for us tonight,” Winczewski said. “Jaxon (Gunville) got hot early, Alex (Schimke) made some big plays down the stretch, Caden Johnson did a great job rebounding and Jacob Schiele gave us some phenomenal minutes. I could go down the list.”

The hard-earned victory also holds a little extra significance, as it marks win No. 300 for Winczewski.

The Magi will get some much-needed rest before they travel to play Turtle Mountain Community High School next Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
