MSU volleyball swept by Southwest Minnesota State

Sean Arbaut/MSU Athletics Minot State junior outside hitter Shelby Spuller (8) attacks the ball in an NSIC match Friday evening against Southwest Minnesota State at the MSU Dome.

By the time the Minot State volleyball team reached 25 points scored in the match, Southwest Minnesota State was rapidly closing in on a decisive three-set sweep. The Mustangs (14-7, 9-4 NSIC) took care of the Beavers (10-12, 4-9 NSIC) Friday evening by set scores of 25-14, 25-6 and 25-13.

MSU junior Shelby Spuller got the first kill of the match and the Beavers hung with Southwest Minnesota State for a while in the first set. Tied at 10-10, however, the tables turned and it was all Mustangs from that point on at the Minot State Dome.

The Mustangs scored 40 out of the next 50 points in the match to take a 2-0 set lead.

The third set saw Southwest Minnesota State jump out to an 8-2 lead and never look back.

The Mustangs hit .385 for the match, while the Beavers were held to a -.021 hitting percentage.

Spuller carried MSU’s offense with nine kills. Nobody else on the team had more than three kills. Libero Karli Koza had a match-high 17 digs in the defeat.

The Beavers host Sioux Falls next at 2 p.m. this afternoon at the MSU Dome.

third draw

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — For the third time this season, the Minot State women’s soccer team played to a draw and picked up a single point.

The Beavers (6-4-3, 4-4-2 NSIC) tied 1-1 with Sioux Falls (4-7-2, 3-5-2 NSIC) on Friday evening with Minot native Sofia Lewis scoring MSU’s lone goal.

It was the 10th goal of the season for Lewis, leading the Beavers. She has scored four goals in MSU’s last two matches.

She opened the scoring Friday evening with the goal coming in the 21st minute and was assisted by senior forward Haley Berryman.

Lewis and Berryman each recorded five shots in the contest. USF outshot MSU, 19-16, but the Beavers had more shots on target, 8-5.

The Cougars got a goal from Lindsey Power in the 56th minute to even the score at 1-1.

Both goalkeepers, MSU’s Erin Rafferty and USF’s Brayden Paul, had to make one save in the sudden-death overtime periods.

MSU travels over to Southwest Minnesota State next to face the Mustangs on Sunday at noon.
