Minot High shows out at West Region Championships

Justin Martinez/MDN Freshman Zachery Diehl reloads for a strike during doubles play at the WDA Tournament on Saturday.

The Minot High boys tennis team held its own on Saturday, competing against top competition at the West Region Boys’ Tennis Championships at Cameron Indoors Tennis Center.

Rory Taney earned the highest honors for the Magicians in singles play. After defeating Jamestown’s Isaac Mimong, 6-3, 6-4, on Friday to advance to the semi finals, the senior fell to Century’s Mason Pitcher, 6-4, 6-1.

Taney ended the day with a nail-biting loss to Century’s Colton Schulte, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, leaving him with a fourth-place finish.

“In the semifinals, (Taney) had a lead late in the first set and just couldn’t close,” MHS head coach Scott DeLorme said. “But he proved he was capable of playing with the top players in the region.”

The Magi fared better in doubles play thanks to the strong outing of Mason and Zachery Diehl.

Despite starting the day off with a loss to Legacy’s Paxton Miller and Jay Moylan, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-4, in the semifinals, the Diehl brothers recovered in the third-place match. Mason and Zachery earned third place with a 7-6 (3), 6-2 victory over Williston’s Rhys Enget and Matt Richter.

The duo of Peyton Huss and Jack Wolsky also had a good outing, claiming fifth place with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Mandan’s Ben Gartner and Kamdin Sedivec.

“(Wolsky and Huss) have the ability to be a very solid doubles team,” DeLorme said. “When they’re active, they have the ability to play with anyone. They showed that today with three very solid matches.”

All five players earned all-conference honors and will play Friday in the individual portion of the Boys Tennis State Tournament in Grand Forks.
