Magi tennis takes second in West Region

Justin Martinez/MDN Sophomore Ridge Jaeger prepares to return a shot during individual play at the WDA tournament on Friday.

After securing their spot in the state tournament Thursday, the Magicians fell to Legacy, 4-1, in the championship finale Friday morning at Cameron Indoor Tennis Center in Minot.

With the team tournament out of the way, it was time for the individual tournament to begin. In singles, Minot High had Rory Taney, Eric Wentz and Ridge Jaeger competing. In doubles, Minot High had two pairs in play in Mason and Zach Diehl and Peyton Huss and Jack Wolsky.

Jaeger advanced out of the first round past Braden Ressler of Mandan, winning in straight sets, but fell to Legacy’s Sean Joyce. Jaeger was then served his second loss by Colby Nehring of Williston.

Wentz fell in Round 2 to Legacy’s Michael Janes. Wentz moved on to defeat Bismarck High’s Noah Fettig and Mandan’s Brady Helbling in the consolation circuit and survives to fight for a state qualifying spot today.

Taney defeated Nick Mathern of Legacy and Isaac Mimong of Jamestown to earn a spot in the semifinals today. Taney will face Century’s Mason Pitcher for a spot in the championship match.

The Diehl brothers defeated Williston doubles pair Hayden Kemp and Jacob Donner for a spot in the quarterfinals today.

Huss and Wolsky fell to Legacy’s Parker Krom and Corby Svihovec in Round 2 of the doubles bracket and will fight for a state qualifying spot today.

The West Region singles and doubles tournaments continue today at Cameron Indoor Tennis Center to determine who will earn their spot in the state tournament.
