Magi tennis takes 6th at state

GRAND FORKS — The Minot High boys tennis team went into the State Duals Tournament as the No. 2-seed from the west after their West Region loss to Bismarck Legacy. The Magi ultimately took sixth in the State Duals Tournament at Choice Health and Fitness in Grand Forks Thursday.

“Throughout the day, we were able to rely on our depth in all three matches, but ultimately came up short in all the singles matches we needed,” Minot High head coach Scott DeLorme said.

Minot High fell in the quarterfinals to Fargo South, 3-2. Their two points came from the Minot High doubles pairs.

The Magi were able to stay in the tournament with a 4-1 win over Century to move on to the fifth-place match against West Fargo Sheyenne.

Minot High came in clutch with their doubles but couldn’t score a point in singles to fall, 3-2, to West Fargo Sheyenne.

“Peyton Huss and Ridge Jaeger went a perfect 3-0 on the day at No. 2 doubles as a steady team all day,” DeLorme said. “Eric Wentz and Ridge Jaeger also had a perfect day at No. 1 doubles going 2-0 before being moved to singles for the final match.”

Mason and Zach Diehl played at the top of the lineup all day and each earned big wins throughout the day.

“I thought our kids played hard today and even in matches we weren’t favored, I thought our kids competed which was great to see,” DeLorme said. “We have a great nucleus of kids coming back and for them to see this level of competition and compete on this stage is only going to help our program going forward.”

The state tournament continues today with individual play. Doubles and Singles tournaments will begin at 9 a.m. at Choice Health and Fitness in Grand Forks.
