Koza breaks record, MSU volleyball swept by Minnesota State

MANKATO, Minn. — The Minot State volleyball team went down in straight sets on the road at Minnesota State Mankato Friday evening by set scores of 25-19, 25-23 and 25-13.

The Beavers (9-10, 3-7 NSIC) were paced by Shelby Spuller with 14 kills. MSU setter Kelsey Dewulf also had a busy evening with 32 assists, eight digs and two aces.

Libero Karli Koza had a team-high 15 digs to break the MSU all-time school record for digs in the Division II era.

Koza surpassed Cindy Pelo and has 846 digs in her Minot State career.

Minnesota State (12-6, 5-5 NSIC) had a team hitting percentage of .273 for the match and got 13 kills from Morgan Olson and 11 kills from Ashton Lee. The Mavericks had lost four out of their last five matches prior to sweeping the Beavers.

MSU has now dropped its last three games after having a three-match winning streak.

The Beavers are back in action this evening on the road against two-time defending national champions Concordia-St. Paul. The match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.

MSU cross country finds success in Jamestown

JAMESTOWN — The Minot State men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in the Jamestown Jimmie Invitational on Friday at the Parkhurst Cross Country Course.

The men finished third with junior Devan Shumway taking second overall in the 8k race with a time of 25:49.9. MSU freshman Ryan Kohler finished 13th overall with a time of 26:50.8. Also racing for the Beavers were Colin Olson (17th), Leo Skellenger (20th), Tory Bergan (34th) and Dante Gadbois (35th).

For the women’s team, the Beavers finished third as a team. Freshman Lauren Reeves posted the fastest time for MSU with a 19:16.2 to take fourth overall on the 5k course. Abby McGee also had a Top 10 finish, taking sixth with a time of 19:20.5. Rounding out the MSU squad was Michaela Larson (18th), Brinlie Nielsen (22nd), Elizabeth (32nd) and Cambree Ferguson (39th).

Both teams will next compete at the NSIC Preview on Oct. 20 in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
