Majettes soccer rolls past Century in consolation semis

BISMARCK — A night and day difference between Thursday and Friday lifted the Minot High girls soccer team (13-2-1) over Bismarck Century in the consolation semifinal round of the NDHSAA State Tournament. The Majettes won Friday 3-0 to earn their place in the fifth-place game.

“It was a really good response for us,” Majettes head coach Matt Pfau said. “You never know what’s going to happen when you get into the losing side of the bracket.”

The Majettes listened to Pfau Thursday when he said they couldn’t afford to take 15-minute breaks. The team fought the entire game, keeping possession, squandering Century’s scoring chances and created opportunities on offense.

Both teams were scoreless in the first half, Minot recorded three shots at the goal while Century had two.

The second half is when the Majettes started to pick up the heat. Seven minutes into the half, Minot’s Allison Lepp put the ball to the net off an unassisted free kick.

MaLiah Burke at the wing, assisted by Mabel Hopkins, scored Minot’s second goal at 18:55 in the half.

Pfau said the efforts of both Burke and Hopkins really lifted the team to their win today.

Emmie Miller cataloged her first career start with the Majettes, capping off the occassion with Minot’s final goal of the game. Miller went unassisted with three minutes remaining to seal Minot’s place in the fifth-place game.

“We spread the field out really well, we went to our outside wings a lot and really stretched (Century) out,” Pfau said about what went well for the Majettes today. Since the teams know each other well, Pfau said the team put an emphasis on keeping Century’s top athletes out of play and forcing their other players into uncomfortable roles.

With one game down and another to go, Pfau and the team hope to finish the season with only two losses. To make the goal a reality, the Majettes will need to win their final game today to take fifth place in the state tournament.

“It’ll be a good way to end the season if we can find a way to win tomorrow,” Pfau said after their game Friday.

The Majettes will take on Bismarck St. Mary’s (8-5-2) for the fifth-place game. Minot has recorded two wins and one loss against St. Mary’s, one win being in the WDA Tournament championship.

The game starts today at 11 a.m. at the Bismarck Community Bowl.
