Evanoff, Magi golf exceptional in WDA tourney win

DICKINSON — With a regional championship on the line, the season-long clash between Minot High School and Bismarck Century out on the links went the Magicians’ way Tuesday at the Heart River Golf Course in Dickinson.

The Magi dropped an impressive team score of 291 (three strokes over par) to win their second tournament of the season and their second West Region tournament title in the past three seasons.

MHS took down the 2018 WDA regular season scoring champions Century to claim the hardware.

The Patriots won six tournaments in the regular season, but carded a team total of 310 on Tuesday to place second. Minot and Century have placed either first or second in all of the WDA tournaments this season. The only tournament they weren’t at the top of the table was the season-opening East-West Classic in Fargo.

The Magi were led at the West Region tournament by senior Easton Evanoff. He shot one of the best rounds of the season with a three-under 69 to be the medalist.

Only Grand Forks Red River senior golfer Adam Van Raden has put together a better round when he shot a 68 at the Bois de Sioux Golf Course on May 21.

MHS senior Kessler Heilman also had his best round of the spring (70) Tuesday to finish as the runner-up. A pair of 76’s to earn sixth-place finishes by Damyn Boyce and Spencer Ross rounded out the Magi’s best team score of the season.

Century’s Jackson Ward placed on the podium behind Evanoff and Heilman with a 73, and was named the WDA Senior Athlete of the Year. Century’s Preston Brown was named the WDA Coach of the Year.

After a dominating and rather memorable outing in Dickinson, the Magi should be overjoyed that the Class A state tournament next week is being held on the same course.

The Heart River Golf Course hosts the two-day season finale on June 5-6.

The MHS boys golf team last won a team state championship in 2003. Minot’s last individual state medalist was Cody Reynolds in 2016.
