Majettes tennis serves up win against Legacy

Ashton Gerard/MDN Minot High senior Alyssa Henson serves the ball Tuesday in her singles match against Bismarck Legacy at Hammond Park in Minot.

The Minot High girls tennis team defeated Bismarck Legacy 8-1 Tuesday at Hammond Park in Minot. The Majettes won all of their doubles matches and gave up only one singles match.

“I thought we played better today than yesterday which is our goal all year,” Minot High head coach Scott DeLorme said. “We want to get better every day and I thought we saw better play up and down the lineup in both singles and doubles.”

Haya Dodin and Raquel Egge didn’t disappoint Tuesday, winning in straight sets and continuing to get some key wins for the Majettes.

“Both of those players are extremely talented and capable of beating anyone they play,” DeLorme said. “We have high expectations for both of them to set a tone for us every time we play and they’ve done that in the first two conference matches this year.”

Coming off a tough loss Monday, Kali Askvig redeemed herself with a convincing win over Legacy’s Hannah Felt in singles.

“Kali Askvig bounced back … for a nice straight sets win at No. 3 singles. Footwork has been a high priority for Kali and as she continues to improve that, she is going to get stronger for us all year,” DeLorme said.

DeLorme said both Alyssa Henson and Eden Olson were able to carry over their wins from Monday with straight set wins Tuesday.

“The depth of this team could be a major asset going forward as we have 8-10 girls who could contribute at some point this year in the varsity lineup,” DeLorme said.

As the season begins to get tough with so many matches, DeLorme says that doubles play will continue to be the team’s focus.

“Aggressive play is a must in doubles and we’re still seeing some tentative areas, but hopefully something we can improve in the next couple of weeks,” DeLorme said.

Next, the Majettes travel to face Bismarck High Thursday. Matches will begin at 4:15 p.m. at Tom O’Leary Tennis Courts in Bismarck.
