Goals galore: Majettes soccer shines in home opener, wins sixth straight

Six goals and the Minot High School girls soccer team improved to 6-0-0.

The Majettes (6-0-0, 4-0-0 WDA) were in complete control Thursday evening in their home opener against Bismarck Legacy at the Optimist Soccer Complex. Led by a hat trick from freshman forward Lainey Sandberg, MHS blanked the winless Sabers (0-5-0, 0-5-0 WDA) with a 6-0 thumping.

This type of outcome has become all too common for Legacy, as they have been outscored 17-0 in five games this year. The Majettes simply compounded the Sabers’ early season struggles.

“I thought it was a great effort,” MHS coach Matt Pfau said. “We used our wings really well to start the game and used our speed. That created a ton of opportunities and put them under pressure right away. So, I’m happy with our offensive effort and our defense did what they had to do.”

Majettes eighth grader Morgan Perrin opened the scoring 14 minutes into the first half by being in the right place and had the ball fall right in front of her for an easy put back.

Six minutes later, Sandberg got her first tally on a low driven cross from the wing by senior Carly McCuaig. Sandberg doubled up with six minutes left in the first half with some help from the Sabers.

“I pressured the goalie and there was some miscommunication with the other team,” Sandberg said. “I just got a touch on it and put it in.”

Sandberg essentially walked in the goal because of the Legacy blunder.

After slotting in three goals in the first half, the Majettes scored three more in the second half.

They started early, two minutes into the final frame, with eighth grader Mabel Hopkins swinging a ball into the box. Legacy goalkeeper Katin Vetter, who replaced starter Brooke Binegar in net, misjudged the ball and it sailed over her head to MHS sophomore Brooke Casey for a simple tap-in.

“We got a young group and we start four eighth graders and three freshmen,” Pfau said. “They have been outstanding so far. I’m looking forward to a good second half (of the season).”

Ten minutes after Casey’s strike, junior Allison Lepp was rewarded with a goal for her bruising play in the midfield. She dribbled past three defenders to get inside the 18-yard box and finished calmly across the goalkeeper.

Sandberg also brushed off a couple defenders to earn her hat trick. Dribbling the ball in from the left wing, Sandberg cut inside and finished a right-footed shot into the left corner to make it 6-0 with 25 minutes remaining.

“We have been working a lot with her,” Pfau said about Sandberg. “Just getting her moving up top so she isn’t standing still. She has been really good the last three games by moving, finding the open spots and creating chances for us.”

Sandberg has four goals and two assists in the Majettes’ last three games.

With the 6-0 lead, Pfau had the luxury of rotating his players around.

“The second half was more about getting different kids into the game and into different positions,” he said. “So, just in case we have to play kids in different spots, we are able to do that later in the year.”

The Majettes domination could be seen in the number of shots taken. Minot High outshot Legacy 30-3 (20-2 shots on target). MHS senior starting goalkeeper Rebecca Kostenko didn’t need to make a save in the first half before giving up the reins to eighth grader Emme Miller in the second half.

The Majettes take their unbeaten streak to Bismarck to face Century at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Sanford Sports Complex.
